Genetic, Anatomical, and Immunological Evaluation
In high-risk pregnancies, accurate diagnosis and effective monitoring require a comprehensive understanding of all maternal–fetal dynamics—not just the baby’s condition.
Genetic, anatomical, and immunological evaluations are therefore essential for ensuring a safer pregnancy journey and creating a personalized care plan for each expectant mother.
Genetic Evaluation
Genetic screening during pregnancy helps identify chromosomal abnormalities, single-gene disorders, and inherited conditions at an early stage.
It is particularly recommended for:
- Women of advanced maternal age
- Those with a history of fetal anomalies or miscarriages
- Pregnancies showing high-risk results in screening tests
In such cases, invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures such as chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis may be advised.
Genetic analysis allows for better preparation before birth and facilitates early multidisciplinary intervention if required.
Anatomical Evaluation
A detailed fetal anatomy scan is a comprehensive ultrasound examination that assesses all fetal organs and systems.
Typically performed between 18–23 weeks of pregnancy, this scan evaluates the development of the heart, brain, spine, kidneys, limbs, and other vital structures.
If any congenital abnormality is detected, advanced imaging such as fetal MRI or fetal echocardiography may be performed for further assessment.
Anatomical evaluation not only aids in diagnosis but also plays a crucial role in birth planning and perinatal management.
Immunological Evaluation
Pregnancy represents a unique state of immune system adaptation.
However, in certain cases, maternal-fetal immune interactions can lead to complications such as alloimmunization or antiphospholipid syndrome.
Immunological factors may underlie conditions such as:
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
- Fetal hydrops
In these situations, specific tests such as antibody screening, thrombophilia panels, and immune regulation analyses are conducted.
If necessary, immunomodulatory therapies may be introduced to stabilize maternal–fetal immune balance.
